FOR THE ASTRONOMERS!?
SETI, or the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, has been in operation for some 50 years now with essentially negative results. According to the current experts, if there were a galactic community of intergalactic intelligent races, all communicating with one another, we would have detected them long ago. But we hear nothing. Furthermore, if they were sending starships around from star to star at light-like speeds, we could detect these as well, due to characteristic radiations that would be given off by such mive bodies moving at light-like speeds. But we see nothing. We must conclude that in our part of the galaxy, the stars and planets we discover are still in the "wild" state, i.e. uninhabited by intelligent beings. I personally believe that nearly all Earth-sized planets will resemble Venus far more than Earth, making intelligent life quite rare in our galaxy. Perhaps we ARE alone. So much the better, in some ways, since our expansion out into the galaxy will be unobstructed by others with similar goals. That is how I feel.
